Meet Albert – Our 2025 “Mary”

Each year at Two Miles for Mary, we choose one of our Seniors Transportation riders to represent “Mary”—a voice for the hundreds of seniors who rely on this vital service. This year, we are honored to introduce Albert.

Albert’s story is one of resilience, courage, and community. Nearly five years ago, Albert’s life was turned upside down when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The long recovery meant almost 10 months in the hospital, and ultimately, the loss of his driver’s license—including his 1A license. For Albert, who had always valued his independence, this was devastating.

After his recovery, Albert moved into the Columbian Centre and eventually visited the Community Service Centre in search of employment. That’s where his journey with Seniors Transportation began. With the help of one of our vocational counsellors, Albert not only found meaningful work but also discovered a safe, affordable way to get there. For the past two years, Seniors Transportation has taken Albert to and from work twice a week—and opened doors for so much more.

“I had seen the vehicle around town and the ads here and there, but before using the service, I didn’t realize how easy it was to register,” Albert shares. “You just have to be 60 years of age or older. The registration only took a few minutes, and then I was able to start using the service—it was that simple.”

Today, Seniors Transportation is Albert’s connection to the community. From doctor’s appointments to grocery shopping, and from social outings to his regular workdays, he knows he can count on our friendly drivers. He often tells his friends and neighbors about the service, proudly comparing it to a taxi or bus: “I once paid $21 for a round trip by cab. With Seniors Transportation, it’s just $5 per trip—or $10 round trip—anywhere in the city. And the drivers are so helpful and kind. I could take a bus, but I’d rather pay the extra $2.00 each way to have door-to-door service and not have to wait outside or transfer to other buses, especially in the winter.”

Beyond his practical use of the service, Albert continues to enjoy life outdoors. One of his favorite things is a fully loaded hamburger—he loves walking over to Humpty’s for their Cowboy Burger or heading to the Gateway Mall to visit Fireside Grill for their famous fully loaded burger. He also enjoys walking and spending time in Prince Albert’s parks—Little Red, Kinsmen, and the Riverbank path are among his favorites. He still finds time for fishing, and as a proud Saskatchewan Roughriders fan (complete with a Riders tattoo!), he never misses a chance to cheer on his team.

Albert agreed to represent “Mary” this year because, as he puts it, “it’s the right thing to do.” He knows firsthand how much Seniors Transportation helps seniors maintain independence and stay connected—and he wants to spread the word so others can benefit, too.
